PERSONAL STATEMENT
Cody Burchfield is an architectural designer, craftsman, and proactive problem solver.
An Oregon upbringing immersed him in crafts, introducing him to a variety of makers. At Whitman College, he studied art and physics, balancing aesthetic and structural problem solving along the way. These essential skills led him to join Michael Curry Design and develop as a designer and fabricator.
While working in fabrication at Michael Curry Design, Cody developed an understanding of a wide variety of materials and how they can combine. Additionally, he designed and built a studio loft apartment in Beaverton. These hands-on experiences provided Cody with a tangible approach to his academic projects.
In 2025, Cody returns to Portland from New York City with a Master of Architecture from Parsons School of Design. At Parsons, Cody was awarded the Alpha Rho Chi Bronze Medal for his leadership and design proficiency amidst his cohort.
While building the necessary technical skills with Rhino and Revit, he explored parametric design via Grasshopper. He worked as a research assistant with a focus on Embodied Carbon – running quantitative estimates on case studies and helping craft introductory curriculum on the subject for undergraduates. He explored case studies in natural building materials, with help from the Healthy Materials Lab at Parsons which pushes the needle forward for healthier interiors.
Cody demonstrates attentiveness to his work and his peers, effectively completing projects independently and communicating efficiently while collaborating with others. He is skilled at balancing desired goals against time and material constraints.
Overall, Cody believes that architecture is entering a challenging period from a climate and social perspective, in which architects must work alongside urban and ecological planners to design structures for a resilient future.
