WHITSQUATCH

In Spring 2016, I produced a single day music festival. I gained funding to book a headlining artist, and then created a line up of local student acts to precede the main performance.

In doing so, I helped create lasting partnerships between the arts magazine and radio station on campus, who come together each year to create a new version of Whitsquatch. It happened successfully in 2017, 2018, and 2019, and aims to be an annual arts festival at Whitman College! (with a pause for COVID, of course)

"The aim of WHITSQUATCH is to create a safe and entertaining platform for varying sections of the Whitman Community to get to know each other better. It is an event designed to give you ample space to move freely, with varying activities for you to participate in. It is an event designed to minimize the social conventions found at house parties and greek affiliated events.

WHITSQUATCH is an attempt to start a new tradition. A tradition that will increase the visibility of students’ ability to create and contribute to culture, as opposed to simply studying culture in classes.

Broadly speaking, changing culture and social conventions requires hard work and intentional organization. If we want to move past old traditions that have created unsafe and compartmentalized spaces, then we must actively replace the old with the new. Fostering connectivity amongst all communities must remain an active priority."
